05. Juni – 11. Juli 2009

——————————-

Carnal desire

05 June – 11 July 2009

Opening: Thursday, 04 June 2009, 7 pm

Organs, entrails and genitals leading a life of their own, heaps of flesh interacting with creatures with mask-like faces, fleshy and wrinkled skin and open wounds, which, despite bearing human traits, look as though they had escaped from our worst nightmares. Shining strings of pearls are flowing from a deer’s open neck, as though the animal’s bowels were spilling onto the floor, intertwining and forming mysteriously glittering shapes.

Despite obvious differences, the works of Gregory Jacobsen (USA) and Myriam Mechita (France) have in common that they turn reality upside down. Bringing the inner life of things to the fore, their near-surrealist stagings make visible that which usually lies hidden.

“Dance of the Retarded Girl Slumped Sideways”, “Massive head, foul smelling”, “Choked off Clotting Lamp” – Gregory Jacobsen’s song titles could just as well apply to his oil paintings, which he executes in the style of the great masters. Whether he makes music, paints or stages performances, the Chicago-based artist creates disquietingly grotesque atmospheres, which are partly owed to his creatures’ facial expressions: they look happy and satisfied, and not in the least affected by their physical impediments or state of decay.

Myriam Mechita has scattered body parts and cut-off heads of animals throughout the exhibition space. These physical remains are clad in polished surfaces, a coat of shining lacquer, and glass beads. The contrast between the mutilated body parts and the glistening materials creates an almost unbearable tension. The mirrors and the glass reflect the light and the surrounding space, producing distorted perspectives that challenge the viewer’s perception. Mechita’s sculptural elements seem caught in the moment – before everything starts flowing again.

23 April – 30 May 2009

Opening: Wednesday, 22 April 2009, 7 pm

With a radical eye, Miron Zownir creates images of people living on the margins of society’s norms and conventions. Zownir is particularly interested in exceptional and extreme situations. Once he has discovered such a corner, he doesn’t let go, sketching and documenting the life of the people that inhabit it. He sheds a light on the dark corners of society, making them visible for all those who would never venture in such areas. Zownir’s images speak about the individual’s loss of control, loneliness, sexuality, intoxication, violence and desire.

Miron Zownir’s pictures of anonymous people are just as enigmatic as his portrait subjects. In his career he has photographed prominent figures such as David Lynch, Klaus Kinski, Ben Becker, Alec Empire or Christoph Schlingensief.

The Berlin-based cult artist manages to establish extremely close contact with the people he photographs. The intensity of the photographer’s quest for the right moment is palpable in his black-and-white close-ups. With a clinically sharp gaze he delves into the subcultures of large modern cities. London, Los Angeles and Moscow are among his stations. In the New York of the 1980s Zownir was called the “Teutonic Phenomenographer” (The Village Voice) for his capacity to track down the daily madness of the local scene.

Bongout Gallery is proud to exhibit the latest photographic work of one of the most uncompromising artists of our time. Beside his activity as a photographer, Zownir also works as a filmmaker and writer. As part of the exhibition, the gallery will present a selection of his short films.

Engelbert Kiefernagel is just as tabooless an artist. Drawings and letters from Miron Zownir’s private collection provide an insight into the work of this headstrong artist, which is marked by extreme erotic fantasies and anarchist thinking.

Bongout is also pleased to announce that Bruno S. will perform one of his legendary live acts on the opening night. Bruno S. is best known for playing the main roles in Werner Herzog’s films “Every Man for Himself and God Against All” and “Stroszek”. Today the actor has resumed his marginal existence as an ambulant street musician.

——————————————————————————————————————

Miron Zownir

23. April – 30. Mai 2009

——————————————————————————————————————

Schöne neue Welt

Opening: 12 March 2009, 7 pm

12 March – 18 April 2009

Welcome! Welcome to the Brave New World. Robin Hood? That was yesterday. These days the rich take it from the poor.

Bongout Gallery presents funny, wild and absurd stories on fallen heroes and anti-heroes on the rise. Laurent Impeduglia’s bizarre oil paintings feature grotesque stars: Rambo speaking of the miracle of life, Badman swearing that he is not bad, and Care Bears seem about to throw themselves off a building.

In Kottie Paloma’s hand-made books, Superman still wears his super tight, super-sexy dress. But judging from his beard, the beer can in his hand and the cigarette dangling from his mouth, our hero in panties has obviously changed.

The animated films by the artists Stéphane Blanquet, Yann Jouette, Wojtek Skowron and Sabrina Tibourtine also deal with weird guys: a grumpy hunter gets himself a new skin; a factory worker falls in love with a headless woman; a world is reduced to machines; a girl sets out to seek herself.

All the works in this exhibition are about lonely figures, exceptional encounters and weird situations in life. In other words, about what the world needs: losers who struggle with daily life like heroes.

29 January–7 March 2009

Opening: Wednesday, 28 January 2009, 7 pm

We ceaselessly establish relationships with others, be they fellow humans or other living creatures. We create systems, become part of systems, break free from them in order to adhere to new ones. In a tight circle of time in the midst of timeless chaos we create our reality, always eager to shape reality according to our own ideas and to retain control at all times. But sometimes we get caught, like flies attracted by the sweet fragrance of a venus flytrap and precipitating their own demise. This is when reality hits us hard and we feel its chilling grip.

In Barbara Breitenfellner’s installation the flies’ harsh reality is cast alongside traces of staged reality as common to film. Inside a greenhouse carnivorous plants are seen devouring insects, while technical devices from a film editing studio seem to be whirling between them – a metaphor for the transience and suggestive power of images. The artist’s works unravels the shadowy aspects and anomalies of a seemingly familiar world whose perceived reality is based on mediated imagery.

For her ongoing series “Chemo Babe”, Eileen Wunderlich has been photographing dead animals. Before taking the picture, the artist bandages, sews and drapes. Each animal is thus is given a new identity. The past year Eileen Wunderlich has been slipping into various roles herself in trying to escape for a short while the reality of her disease. She has thus satirized both her own reality and the outside world.

Carolin Löbbert’s dream-like images are populated with colourful birds sitting on thick branches and singing. But this first impression of a harmonious natural state is deceitful, and spectators soon discover death lurking in the bushes, its masked acolytes hiding in the pond nearby. Thick drops cover the images. The birds are not merely singing – they bleed, defecate, and eventually die in these hostile surroundings.

All these works have something simultaneously dark and funny about them. All of them are instilled with an all-pervasive and palpable sense of life’s energy.

—————————

Autopoiesis

28. Januar – 07.

This strange and drastic mise-en-scène combines senseless actions and tragicomic symbolism.

From the deer stand the sharp eye sees a bunch of humans that could be originating from plants. Scraps of leather turn into bottom-waggling pigs and sheep, squares and triangles become mountain vistas. Abstract paintings emerge from the finest slaughtering with a dinosaur skeleton. Gaudy posters let it crack. Stark naked bears, wearing nothing but shoes and socks, or even clad in old-fashioned underwear, are seen posing proudly and merrily.

Exhibition Family Jewels
(curated by Conny Becker & Damien Deroubaix)

Opening Tuesday October 28th at 7pm
From October 28th till December 6th 2008

Family trees – a prototype of conservatism. Not surprisingly, in Germany negative connotations can arise when it comes to listing one’s genealogy, with regards to the 1930s and 1940s and beyond.
What does a family tree reveal about a person born into particular circumstances? Guilty by having a grandfather with an unaccepted ideology?
Damien Deroubaix is guilty. Fully responsible, as his family tree is self-made. Roots are nourished by Pablo Picasso, Fritz Lang, Noam Chomsky, and Matthias Grünewald, masses of leaves burgeon into the dark night, spreading out into the realm of figurative painters, Grindcore bands, writers and artist friends, feeding Deroubaix’s work as well as being fed by him. One part of the tree, however, is very badly nourished as the humus is provided by business and religious vomit. What else could this lead to other than politics, mass media and the “scène parisienne (+ proche banlieue)” or postmodernism?
Born out of a project for the French art newspaper Particules in 2008, Deroubaix’s pedigree is still expanding. It’s more than just situating the artist in his ideological network or rendering homage to John Heartfield, Robert Rauschenberg, or Francis Bacon. This work is no dead end, but rather an impulse for something new.
In the Bongout Showroom, Berlin, the work, having grown into a wall drawing, acquires a third dimension, with contemporary artists transforming their very names into sculpture, painting, drawing, serigraphy, collage, or video. Nineteen international artists will give their answers to the two lonesome money cadavers mocking the tree: Ironic as Fabien Souche or Joep Van Liefland, poetic as Nicole Bianchet or Barbara Breitenfellner, or with a strike in the face as Manuel Ocampo, Stu Mead, or Assan Smati, the exhibition provides a bubbling contrast to the decorative art that the simultaneous art fair – Art Forum – will surely present.

———————————————-

Ausstellung Family Jewels
(kuratiert von Conny Becker & Damien Deroubaix)

Vernissage Dienstag 28. Oktober um 19 Uhr
Vom 28. Oktober bis zum 6. Dezember 2008

Im dunklen Wald ( In the Dark Forest)
A few years ago, Swiss restaurant owner Daniel M. was brought to court after he had ordered books with drawings by Antoine Bernhart and Jean-Louis Costes from Bongout editions. Daniel M. was accused of possession of illicit pornographic material following the Swiss authorities’ assessment that the content of the publications was excessively brutal, sadistic and erotic. In appeal, however, Daniel M. was cleared of all accusations and recovered his books.

Bongout Showroom will not let this act of censorship stand uncommented. On 27 August 2008 the gallery will therefore inaugurate a comprehensive solo exhibition of French artist Antoine Bernhart, whose work has recently been featured at Geneva’s Mamco (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art).

Bernhart’s large-size watercolours introduce us to a world of power, lust and cruelty. They depict grotesque sceneries with tied-up women – and, in recent works, increasingly often men – at the mercy of masked creatures, monsters and doll-like characters. Bernhart’s motifs clearly reflect the artist’s fascination with Japan in general, and shibari (Japanese bondage) in particular, while the grotesque faces lurking behind dark trees, the burning houses and wild animals are eerily reminiscent of fairy tales gone wrong.

Antoine Bernhart gained international recognition in the early 1980s for his black-and-white drawings, which appeared on record covers, flyers, posters and fanzines for bands such as The Meteors, and later The Tall Boys, The Sting Rays, The Cramps, The Prisoners and Billy Childish’s Milkshakes. A selection of these early works, which have achieved cult status, will be shown in the front room of the gallery.

As part of this exhibition Bongout will publish two new books with works by Antoine Bernhart.

Warning: Some of the graphic material in this exhibition might hurt viewers’ sensibilities and is not suited for children and adolescents.

———————————————————————–

Opening Thursday July 3rd at 7PM

From July 3rd till August 23rd 2008

Frédéric Magazine

Known for expensive cafés and indignant waiters, Paris now also has a reputation for churning out an impressive quantity of small, raw and seemingly spontaneous drawings. One of the reasons for this boom is that rents are high, while living and working space is scarce. Among the protagonists of this scene is the artists’ collective “Frédéric Magazine”, whose drawings use basic materials such as ball pens, pencils, felt pens and blotched paper. Their works can be produced anytime anywhere, thus reflecting the artists’ daily lives. Together they have decided to relinquish their individual names in favour of a common identity called “Frédéric”.

Since 2004 its founding members (Isabelle Boinot, Frédéric Fleury, Emmanuelle Pidoux, Frédéric Poincelet, Stéphan Prigent alias Kerozen) have been publishing new images daily on their website (http://fredericmagazine.free.fr). In the Bongout gallery space their individual drawings function like fragments of a three-dimensional artwork. The tight hanging reveals the stylistic particularities of each of the artists, but while everyone depicts their own world, the sum of their works forms a whole universe with impressions from daily life.

On the occasion of this exhibition, Bongout will produce a limited edition of silkscreen prints of drawings by “Frédéric Magazine”.

—————————————————————————————-

Frédéric Magazine

Paris.

It seemed normal that we should invite them to make the Bongout showroom their home for a few weeks.

The Last Ten Shots

(curated by Bongout & Thibaut de Ruyter)

The American company Polaroid recently announced its decision to stop the production of its famous instant cameras and films. We are all familiar with the unique noise (gzzzzzzzklok), the waiting time and the joy of seeing — as if by magic — an image appearing on the instantly identifiable format: 7,7 x 7,7 cm. More often than not blurred, the subject partially or wholly out of shot, too bright or underexposed… disappointement was often as big a part of the game as anything else. The advent of the digital camera era has rendered this adventure obsolete. Sooner or later, the Polaroid will become ‘history’, an highly collectible and instantly recognizable relic from the analog times. Without nostalgia, we have provided 28 artists with a 600 cartridge containing 10 colour shots and asked them to shoot their last ever Polaroids. An architectural photographer, a pornographic one, a conceptual artist, a specialist in self portraits, a painter, and so forth. All were given the same deal: “Here’s the film, just give us the results! Even if only one photo satisfies you. Even if it’s blurred. Even if it just looks like a Polaroid…”
